Can't decide whether to head out to the Westchester or the Palisades Park Mall--the reason why PPM sweetens the deal is because of the Invisible Shield kiosk that is no doubt set up right outside that Apple Store!

I have a 12-core Mac Pro which I just upgraded with 2x X5690 3.4GHz
and I am just trying to find out if one of my chips is running at a safe temp or not.
Using Prime95 http://mersenne.org/freesoft/
Blend test (Lots of everything) to hit max temps.
CPU B full load: 63c , CPU A is the culprit at 73c

I was looking at the mac mini with snow leopard server. I would use it for my work, but I have a few apps on the current server that only run on windows. Is there a way that I can run those apps on the mini server? I know I have a couple of programs that use microsoft.net.

The Buyer's Guide is being transitioned to the Guides (http://guides.macrumors.com) just for cases such as this - anyone (members with over 5 posts, that is) can update the Guides. The new Buyer's Guide isn't fully functional yet, as there are still a few problems that need fixing, but I've made the changes you suggested to the LCD Buyer's Guide page.

Time Machine is not the best fit for your needs. Time Machine will let you tell it what you don't want it to back up, not what you do. In other words, you can't tell it to just back up your Music folder +1. Apple used to offer an application known as Backup which kind of does what you want, but its only available to MobileMe members at this point. You should also see whether the manufacturer of the hard drive offers a utility on the drive itself that allows you to schedule backups of a particularly folder. Someone else may be able to recommend other software for you to try.

Your list is a great start. If you master those things, you'll have some very valuable skills.
Keep it up!!
Thanks! I sure hope so, I was looking at a monster of a Javascript book the other day... got a bit of a challenge ahead of me, but I have liked coding so far.
I got my development job from learning PHP, once you start being able to hook into databases and write "real" functions (something that imo javascript isn't much good for) then you can do some really cool stuff :)
Just out of curiosity I was looking at job listings for web development and most of them listed PHP as something they wanted people to know, so I figured it was something I should be learning. Thanks for confirming that!

I spoke to one of my dealers today and they offered me two demo 20" ACDs for c250$ less than the 23".
I do hobby video and photos with no chance of going pro. The two things that bug me about the two displays are 1. the "gap", especially when watching DVDs (can I?) and 2. I loose c150pixels in height vs the 23", important for portrait mode, or is 150 something I should get over??!!
Thanks - you've steered me right so far, guys! :)

bringing back an old thread :D
any idea how to do these sorts of things for the system prefs pane of F@H? i would like to change the amount of CPU usage/cores if possible. i like BOINC so much because you can change everything, this F@H pref pane is so... basic..
well most people use the console version. it's really pretty easy to use, and gives you much more control over the pref pane.
sorry i know that's not much help. i don't use the pref pane anymore, so i can't help too much anymore. but if you can, maybe a screenshot of what you're not sure of?

I wouldn't recommend a pan type head for landscape photography either. Maybe it was because I only used cheap quality pan heads (the ones they put on junk tripods) but a good quality ballhead is far superior to that. Once the tension is set properly, you can simply grab the camera, adjust it on the ballhead to whatever arbitrary orientation you want, and when you let go it stays in place. No muss, no fuss, no messing with locking down 3 separate axis levers, etc. Just put the camera where you want it and it stays, period.
A pan head is most useful in video applications because you can easily pan one axis independently and smoothly, with a ballhead the panning motion won't be quite as smooth.

Colors are awesome, Really noisy though.. I'm not a professional photographer but *I think* if you lowered your ISO and increased your Aperture that would help fix it?
I'm probably wrong so don't think I'm acting as a know it all, I'm just suggesting what I think might help.
Otherwise, Great angle and really cool shot anyway!
It was shot at f/1.4. Don't have the coin to open up any bigger than that.

I wonder if Leo Laporte hired him at TWiT. On one of the shows the other day, he said they had a new employee coming in, but didn't say who it was.
Hmmm... I remember Leo saying he wanted a New York studio for a morning show on TWiT.
Engadget is based out of NYC if I'm not mistaken.
Improbable, but it would be cool.
