All these posts and not one mentions MacBreak Weekly…
On many of the old episodes ( from the beginning up to about 1.5 years ago) he was a regular panelist. I think that's a much easier way to understand a little more about what he does (context, if you will) and his personality.
That said, he is an acquired taste! :p

The reservation line for the ipad went really fast, the non-reservation one was slower. I haven't been to any iPhone launches though - they will definitely move slower because of the activation.

I was actually hoping Apple's Movie Store would flop. Apple needs a wake-up call, and needs to stop cutting corners.

edit: it appears to be the reed switch tha tI need to trigger, and it's in the trackpad. Only problem is that my trackpad that I yanked off the enclosure appears to be broken. So target disk mode is the only answer.
update: also, can I use this program if I don't have the pram battery board connected?

Wow, that is great. Does the amount of the student discount depend on school, or is it the same regardless? Also, I called Apple store and they told me that the student discount is anywhere from $50 to $200. I configured the iMac online (Apple's site Education Store) and the difference between a regular price and the student price is $135. $2,349 (reg. price) vs. $2,214 (student price). What am I missing? 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 2TB Serial ATA Drive, everything else is default.
The low end 21" gets a $50 discount, the rest get a $100.
MBP's get a $100 discount for the 13" and base 15" model. The higher end 15" and 17" models get a $200 discount.
I picked up a 27" yesterday, and received the $100 education discount.

Not sure I understand - If I were to forward each of her text threads (conversations) to my iPhone - then switch iPhones - then forward them back to her new phone... they would have the conversations attached?

Have an issue here, and it might be in the wrong forum, but I guess I will find that out soon enough. I thought I followed Mactracker right to get a 4 gig upgrade for my G5, but alas they do not fit...I have 2 2gb kits of Kingston PC2 3200's that I would like to trade for compatible kits to fit my current G5 1.8 that was a single proc uppgraded after purchase.
They are compatible with the later generation dual 2.0's and up ppc G5's

IIRC, you cannot use the USB driver for a printer that you have networked. Download and install the GIMP-print CUPS driver for the LaserJet 1200 when accessing it over your network.
What is a GIMP-print CUPS driver and where do I find it, please? I can only find something described as a driver for a HP LaserJet 1200.

I just got an N router so this little guy needs to go. I bought it in December, it's still under warranty. It's a Belkin MyEssentials Wireless G Router, has everything that a basic wireless router has, can be used as an access point as well. Works fine, just wanted to upgrade.

favorite one for me is a local computer shop. they build/fix/sell only pc related stuff, but the shop computer and the register computer are both imac g3/500 systems. both installed and working since new ('01, '02 ?) without any failure. it's fun to see this stuff still in use!

I received the MBA software update even with 10.6.6. However, I didn't aware of any sleep issue since Christmas.

It's a niche market for now, and most users don't use it at all. But once peripherals start using TB, it will become more widespread. But peripheral manufacturers won't rush out products until there is a good install base of computers that support TB. For that to happen, Apple will need to support it throughout its product line. Whether that happens this year or by the beginning of 2012 depends on when the products get updated. All new Macs will have TB.
Of course, if it's limited to Macs it will still be a niche market. Unless it's adopted by the PC market, it could become the next FireWire (superior to USB in many respects, but not omnipresent like the latter). In addition to hard drives and monitors, I think we'll soon see TB connectors on scanners, cameras and more.
In terms of bandwidth, the desktop can do better by using other cards in PCIe slots. On the laptops though, it offers more bandwidth than they've had access to previously (eSATA ExpressSlot cards aren't anywhere near as fast as TB is).
TB is convenient for laptops and devices as well, which is expected to help promote adoption for that market (i.e. see single disks on TB, and allow for others to be connected to a single port via Daisy Chaining). And Intel's aimed this at all computer users (even seen a phone advertised with TB), so it's not exclusive to Apple. So I do expect more devices to actually ship within a year or so as adoption increases (need more systems to release that are currently in development, as like you, I do see a bit of a "chicken and egg" situation).

Hi,
I need a link to 4.3 firmware
just got a refurbished 3GS from apple which has iOS 4.2.1 on it and i cant back up my restore point as it was done on iOS4.3
if I try to update in itunes it downloads the latest 4.3.2 which may also not be compatible with my restore which was last done on iOS4.3
I need to update the replacement iphone to 4.3 then restore my 4.3 backup and then obviously put the latest 4.3.2 on it !

BOINC doesn't support OpenCL or CUDA beyond being a 'gateway' for the apps that use BOINC to enable it. The apps themselves that run in BOINC are the ones that must do the legwork of incorporating OpenCL or CUDA support into the programs. CUDA support on the mac is very limited compared to windows, so you don't see any MacCUDA clients. OpenCL is very promising, but it's still a pretty new technology so I don't expect programmers to really use it much for the time being, but as time goes on that will improve. Also with CUDA much farther along on Windows, which in turn is a majority of BOINC users, there isn't much incentive to use OpenCL yet. OpenCL is 10.6, and 10.6 is a small percentage of Mac, which in turn are a small percentage of BOINC users.
See the problem? Again this will change over time, but for the moment don't expect much GPGPU support in BOINC for macs.
Let's hope this changes!

Looking at the BOINC alfa builds 6.10.xx set have GPU recognition turned on for OSX. Both ATI and Nvidia. Now when I asked the question on the SETI forums around the release of SL one of the GPU opti app writers said right now no one knows how to port the window or linux science app over to OSX 10.6. He said right now they are having difficulties writing the ATI GPU app for windows and linux. He said because OSX never supported it in the past no one has OSX experience porting to GPU and with the new API (Open CL). He said some of the folks doing CPU opti aps for OSX are peeking at it but not much is happening right now. Now if any one has friends at Apple I am sure the chief scientist and Dev crew would love for some help. A good place for them to ask in the Forums at seti and other projects you or they have an interest in.
Edit I would offer to help but I have no HW that supports GPU crunching at this time and I have done no programing in 20 years.
