My 4th gen white "classic" is still going strong too. I hope they never do away with the design-- it's so iconic.
Mine is too :D
Although the only problem I've had with it is when I hook it up to my car's Harman/Kardon... when I disconnect it, it stays in the "Okay to Disconnect" screen and I have to reboot the iPod. :-/

Yeah I read the entire page yesterday at work. Couldn't stop reading it. Does the book have more material?
'Cause when I got "I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell" I was disappointed. It had the same stuff from the website with a tiny bit of extra content.

Rendzevous is an open-source implementation of the Zero-conf networking standard. It was created by apple.
It is likely that most devices will within the next few years, if they are networkable, come with Rendzevous built-in.
Microsoft have yet to implement either Rendzevous or any part of the Zero-conf standard yet. If they do it will likely be a proprietary version as is usual for them.
To use TCP/IP with a Windows machine is not hard. Just search here or MacOS X Hints (http://www.macosxhints.com) for information on it.
As for iChat Rendezvous, it will not work with a Windows PC yet. To chat with them they will need to get an AIM or .Mac account. You can then use them through that.
I have heard that ICQ can also be used in iChat AV.
Sorry for the long post, hoped it helped and Good Luck.

Hi, I am in need of saving some space on my Mac. I have noticed (especially with pictures) that there are a lot of duplicate everything in my hard drive.
The trouble that I'm having is sometimes when I try to delete pictures it says something about an original alis not being found; so I cant delete it.
Any help/tips on how to delete things would help, for I'm no computer wiz.
(I have a Mac OS X, with latest software 10.6.7)
Thanks!

That's kind of what's happening, no? In this case, the driver is picking up the details through Software Update hitting the Apple config website.
Not quite. I was proposing something more automatic, without users having to respond to prompts and wait for installers to run.
I know that some people want precise control over what gets installed, but these kinds of trivial updates seem like bother we could do without. Imagine if you launched iTunes, clicked iTunes Store, and it said "The list of top weekly hits is out of date. Click here to install an iTunes update". That would be awful! Instead, we expect it to fetch the latest data automatically, so I wondered if O.S. updates for camera data and printer drivers could be handled that way too.

OR change you default shell in the netinfo database.
And the easiest way to do this from Terminal is:
chsh -s tcsh
This happened at a contractor who produced parts for iPhones, so Apple actually made it their issue and resolved it. You can say all day long "problems in China are not Apple's problems", but Apple disagrees strongly with you. And maybe the Chinese government lets companies get away with things, but Apple doesn't.
THis is not what I am saying at all. Everyone is quick to blame Apple and pin it on them that these other factories cut corners when Apple is not looking. At best, all Apple, or anyone else for that matter, can do is check things out ahead of time, continually go back and check things unannounced and hope things work out. My point is that it is a shame that a company, like Apple, has to go to this length. That no one on the Chinese government side seems to be interested in addressing issues like this.

Just wanted to get a thread running on what powerbook specs are expected with this speculated Nov. 5th update. Personally, I think the following is reasonable:
1Ghz G4 (low end staying at 800mhz)
512 mb DDR RAM (I know the processor can't fully utilize it yet, but it does run at a lower voltage and therefore it will reduce heat)
Better heat dissipation system
Radeon 9000 preferably with 64mb of RAM
I really hope that bluetooth is included, but the above are really all I think we can realistically expect.
Now.... does anyone have any information to the contrary????

CS4 was a nightmare on my Mac, so I couldn't wait for CS5. But it's been pretty underwhelming for me. While the Adobe apps no longer crash continually, they are really sluggish in SL. PS images opened faster on my old PowerMac G5 with CS1. Even GIMP running through X11 is faster. Flash is still an incomprehensible mess, and getting worse instead of better. I don't know where to lay blame for Adobe's products, but in the end it only will hurt Apple. When I see others running CS5 flawlessly on a PC, I start to think maybe it's time to switch back....
Both Flash CS5, Photoshop CS5 as well as Lightroom 3 works AWESOMELY on 10.5.8 (haven't had a chance to test other stuff properly)
When I say awesomely I mean not a single crash so far, speed has improved drastically and I also haven't noticed any bugs either...
So don't think about Windows - its horrible OS - just go back to 10.5.8 :)

Hey folks, got a 2.6 i5 MBP here and at times it gets a bit too hot, especially during Skype of all things? Not a major problem.
I have downloaded and intalled iStat which looks a cool piece of software - accessed via the 'DashBoard' but what I would prefer is to have the temperature, cpu usage, fan speed etc constantly displayed, somewhere on my screen regardless of what I am doing - is this possible?
Thanks
James

Regarding what Dav posted, would I need to be jailbroken on 3.2.2?
just got my iPad 1 in today and the firmware is old school.
I know 4.3 has a tethered jailbreak on it right now AND it has some battery issues and what not
Would I be able to somehow update to 4.2.2 INSTEAD of 4.3? That way I'd hold on to good battery life and untethered jailbreak. Once more, I am NOT jailbroken right now so I am wondering if I need to do that first.
Step one would be to download and run TinyUmbrella, this will check to see just what the previous owner did. If he never saved SHSH Blobs then your only option would be to upgrade to 4.3. There is no real need to jailbreak first.

Love your unboxings, Samurai, seem to remember a meat cleaver being used on your dad's. Maybe a chainsaw next...!
I always unbox my Macs by turning the box upside down once opened, then pull box from 'beast'-it's a lot easier. Saves me back!
Thanks

i have an old mac with spreadsheets on it and i have to convert beagle works (BWss) files so that i can run them on my new system i dont know how to do this, i bought a converter software but nothing i buy supports beagle works someone help please
Try exporting the data from Beagle Works (or Saving As, you might be able to get it into some other program, like Microsoft Excel, or AppleWorks.
If you could provide more info on your set-up, you'll probably get more responses.
Hope this helped

Hello. I have the IPT 64GB (Fall, 2009 model). I plan to buy one more USB-IPT connection cable. There are products by other companies that are half the price. Do I need to worry about compatibility problem? Thanks.

Question for iBook users:
I noticed iBooks in a few different computer stores that had damaged keyboards. Those particular ones were beyond repair. Because it was with more than one, it made me wonder about how well the things are put together. Has this been an issue with iBooks? Maybe the original iBooks? Or are store customers just overly hard on them?
Still thinking on whether to get a new Powermac or a portable. I'll probably just get an upgrade card and wait another year.
