You could literally walk into an apple store, blindfold yourself, spin around a couple times, and walk into any computer in the store and have something that will suit your needs adequately.
Having said that, I would recommend the stock 13" MacBook Pro. I daresay it's the best value for an Apple laptop. I wouldn't recommend a MacBook Air as your primary machine. I know you had mentioned your dad has an iMac, but you don't want to have to use his computer every time you need a more capable machine.

The main question is usually whether new iTunes versions are compatible with the various jailbreaking processes. For example the Spirit jailbreak could not be done if your iTunes was later than a certain version (9.1 I think). I don't remember hearing about iTunes messing up an already jailbroken iDevice.

Ed Zander publicly joined the ranks of CEOs (including Bill Gates) waiting for the moment in time when cell phones would render the iPod obsolete this week in 2005.
I bet Zander wasn't happy when Apple released the iPhone...

Yes, I COULD, but I'm not going to go out and buy a pack just for that. Anyway, I found a solution. Thanks.

I have an unopened box of AppleCare for a MacBook Pro. $225 shipped. If you let me email you the code only, I'll give it to you for $220.
And, if you hate eBay/PayPal, use mass pay (http://www.dnforum.com/f34/how-do-paypal-mass-pay-payments-avoid-fees-read-learn-thread-266771.html) when you pay. I'm trying to get in the habit for when I buy :)

Great post & well done.
It's great to see one so young (going by your profile), so passionate about such old equipment. :)
As an old fart who remembers doing component level repair on those Power/Sweep boards, floppy drives and motherboards when the exchange price of a Power/Sweep was AU$450.00, it makes me appreciate somebody taking the time to go this far.
At least when I'm gone there will be those who care enough to keep these curios going. :D

Hey, hope someone can help.
My macbook took a fall the other day and I got the White screen of death, I plugged it into my external monitor and it worked fine. Tried resetting the PRAM and now the external monitor won't pick it up.
Took it to a mac store and they quoted me the price of a new macbook (mines 4 years old) to fix it, saying the hard drive and screen need replacing.
Is there anyway I can test this? or at least try and get the external monitor working again? Can't afford the repairs or a new macbook :(
Thanks

I would as well, but the big question is; Will it work with all celluar carriers?
as long as I can use it with Cingular I will be happy... I have a family plan through them and it would cost $800 to get out of my contract.

well found out why backup power didn't come on.
for some odd reason the power and natural gas lines got cut, backup is by natural gas
That's a real bummer. Someone made a huge mistake. Not the first or last the a contractor was in error. This kind of thing seems to happen a lot in Massachusetts. It's lucky that a fire was averted. Any idea how long the fix will take?

Can you play World Championship Poker online against others? Do you have the boxes? Where are you located? Is $15.00 the price shipped or is shipping more?

could be a bug with a program that "hacks" the system, such as an icon editor. try turning off any login items and restarting. also, for everyone else (royal pineapple already posted this there), check out my panther bugs and problems thread at funmac.com (http://www.funmac.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2063)

One of my favorite shows, NOVA, has made an episode on IBM's 'Watson' supercomputer and its road to competing on Jeopardy! - and it's AMAZING!
There have been several posts in a Jeopardy! thread in the Current Events forum about Watson. But it's Watson! And "The Smartest Machine on Earth" should have its own thread.
The technology used to develop it and what it all means to the future of the computer industry is very exciting and this show should be watched by anyone interested in that.
The NOVA special does not have spoilers about who won the challenge.
Please don't post spoilers about the Jeopardy! taping if you already know the outcome.
Watch online: NOVA - Smartest Machine on Earth (http://video.pbs.org/video/1786674622)
Watch on iPad: PBS for iPad App (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pbs-for-ipad/id398349296?mt=8#ls=1)
The Watson vs Ken Jennings vs Brad Rutter Jeopardy! Challenge will air on February 14-16.
Yo, it's gonna be tha bomb, dawg!

I've recently installed an SSL. All browsers on Mac and windows works fine. Also, Opera works great on the iPhone. When I visit the site on Safari on the iPhone or iPad, I get the SSL error "cannot verify server identity." I'm not finding any solutions to the issue. I've also verified everything on http://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-checker.html
I have other sites with SSLs that work fine on the same server. The SSL issuer is also the same. I just don't get it.
Has anyone ever had this issue or knows how to resolve it?
Thanks everyone.

I have mine pre-ordered, but now after finding out they are giving away t-shirts to the first customers, I think I'll go and pick up a copy for a friend of mine and just keep the t-shirt!

Register Hardware notes (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2010/02/18/iphone_gambling/) that Apple has modified the iPhone SDK to specifically allow developers to include sweepstakes and lottery functionality in their App Store applications. The new rule is unambiguous:
"3.3.17 Your Application may include promotional sweepstake or contest functionality provided that You are the sole sponsor of the promotion and that You and Your Application comply with any applicable laws"The report notes that developers must clearly state in any contest rules that Apple is not a sponsor of nor responsible for conducting the promotions.
Also referenced in the report is The KaChing Button (http://appshopper.com/entertainment/the-kaching-button), an application introduced in December that previously only served to allow users to make a novelty "ka-ching" sound. The $0.99 application was updated last week, however, to include sweepstakes functionality under the new SDK terms, allowing the application's developers to offer "up to $1000" per day in prizes over the next month to random winners selected from those pressing the KaChing Button within the application. Daily prizes (http://www.kachingbutton.com/daily-kaching-winner-announcements/) thus far have been at the minimum $100 level and will presumably be increased should revenue from application purchases support such payouts.

I called a little while ago and they told me they would be closing up at around 3p. They also told me that they would be equipped to "accommodate" a line.
When I asked for availability, I was told that they would have "plenty" to last through the weekend. Sounds very promising.
I have the day off, so I'm thinking I'll swing by noon to 1ish and check it out. If there's no big line then I'll just get there at around 3 330ish to be safe.
When are you thinking?
(32GB White iPad 3G ftw!)
