Thanks.

If it is any consolation to those who don't have an Apple store, I live in Melbourne where we have two (and an other one coming soon?) and I've never been there.
There are Apple specialists all over the place - they're just as good, just no fancy interiors.

Terrible lag on the iPhone 3G. Works great on the iPad though.

im not to sure how this is relevant. form controls can be controlled via CSS
we do it on all of our sites.
and why would you want them to look prettier against what the site has designed ? the design we choose for our form controls via CSS are designs that fit in with the rest of the site. things like color, control border thinkness, flat, 3d, etc... are all part of layout design
this is like being able to adjust the size of text on a web page after the page has rendered. its fine if your eyes are bad and need bigger text to read it, but the web developers chose that size text cause thats what goes with the site. not cause they just happened to like 10 or 12 point fonts.
just a view.

i can't recall all the setting for the pref pane, but i know you can start the console version with the -configonly parameter to configure the client.
but let me ask, what machine are you running this on? and which client are you running?
i replied that question in another thread you asked yesterday (i think). its the i7 imac :)
client? umm when i open the console it says Version 6.29r1. does that help?

I am a recent iMac and iPod touch owner thanks to Apple's Back to School promotion. I'm wondering if the App Store will be available to iPod touch owners. Many of those apps, I would assume, could work for the touch as well as the iPhone. Furthermore, if the touch is more of a multimedia device, touch owners would be more likely to buy games than iPhone users. Apple would only be limiting their potential revenue by excluding touch users from the store. But unless I'm mistaken, there was no mention of the iPod touch in the keynote.

Keep in mind that the machine runs fine for a while.. and then seems to "become unstable". When it's running poorly.. it's difficult to get to the activity monitor-
I was able to look in there while it was doing ok--and I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. In fact the CPU usage seemed low and the memory (as little as there is).. didn't seem to be filled up too bad. Are there some system logs that might provide hints to the cause of the problem?
Next time I get my paws on his machine.. I'll get a list of everything and post it ... thanks!

Lets say what you're suggesting is correct in some situations with some video. Even with double the bandwidth we're only talking about 6-8MB. Until recently I had a 100mbit local network but I upgraded to gigabit via PCI card. My 100mbit performance was regularly at 9.7 - 11.4MB/sec with cat5e.
In conclusion.. although the ibook could never play an HD video itself it could easily host it on even a "slow" 100mbit network.
I didn't say anything about the iBook being able to play HD video.

well found out why backup power didn't come on.
for some odd reason the power and natural gas lines got cut, backup is by natural gas
That's a real bummer. Someone made a huge mistake. Not the first or last the a contractor was in error. This kind of thing seems to happen a lot in Massachusetts. It's lucky that a fire was averted. Any idea how long the fix will take?

I upgraded my 3G to iOS 4 and now I'm regretting having done so. At first it seemed to be somewhat faster, but a few days later after I loaded my data (contacts, music, emails), I noticed that the phone's performance went down to the floor.
Now I'm considering going back to 3.1.3.

Hey, did anyone know that if you hold the shift key and use Expose, it does it in slow motion? It is cool! Try it.

Boinc on Osx 10.57 doesn't crunch with the Nvidia 9400m?
While I was trying out Win 7 I installed Boinc and Seti@home was crunching with the cpu and gpu.
As far as I know Nvidia and ATI have bugs in the drivers that will not be fixed for GPU crunching until snow leopard is out and new science apps are written to take advantage of it. I think Open CL is the programing API that fixes this with new drivers and OSX side stuff. I am told the science apps will need to be recompiled and maybe rewritten. I have questions posted on the BOINC and SETI message boards asking about this.

Before a Mac Mini media server would work, it would need, at the least, more RAM, better video card, and more output options... not to mention a bigger HD.

Is backing up any different than syncing?
Pardon my ignorance - I went from an ipod nano 4th generation household to a 2 iPod touches - 1 iPad 2 - 2 iPhone 4 - 1 macbook pro 2011 13.3 in 4 months...
The iPod touch IS a gateway drug.
No need to pardon your ignorance....
I think it is different but maybe I'm wrong. To be safe do this:
-Fire up iTunes and plug in her black phone.
-Right-click on it and click on "backup".
-Let it do it's thing and when it's done disconnect it.
-Plug in the new white phone and when you're setting it up select the option to restore from a previous backup (its worded something like that).

This is precisely what I am afraid of. Why might a higher resolution, i.e., a screen with more detail, sharper images, sharper texts, make it harder or more of a strain to see/read? Is it only because the texts are smaller?
Well the higher res means that they can fit more detail on the screen by effectively shrinking the text etc because because it wont look pixelated and will give more space. Now thats fine on a large screen, but when it comes to the MBA and other netbooks, particularly the 11" MBA, the screen size is physically quite small, so the detail is shrunk even further in order to maintain the same ratio and high res. Difficult to explain and maybe somebody could do better than me.
Its fine generally as it's perfectly readable and makes for a nice amount of usable real estate on the screen, but it does encourage squinting, even for somebody with 20/20 vision.
