I've always wanted one too. Would it work as a good web server? I might just make one a home file server.

Well I don't really know for sure about completely resetting the computer but I'm sure there is a comprehensive guide online somewhere. In terms of backing up, try CarbonCopyCloner for Mac; people give it great reviews and rate it higher than other programs in terms of ease of use and speed. I haven't used this yet but I had downloaded it to my HDD about 2 weeks back to use when I get home.
With this, it's possible to backup to a portable hard drive (just like Time Machine, apparently any external HDD large enough will work) and will enable you to re-install everything when you get your new computer.
And again I haven't used it yet but I'm sure this is how it works. good luck :)

This is definetly one piece of software I would like Apple to put into iLife. Monster stuff at present only uses Amazon and is pretty flakey for international support and more obscure material - which is the reason I have held back getting it.
from what i've heard 1.5 will address a few of these issues. they tried getting info from imdb but they license it out all weird and blah blah blah.. check out their blog (VERY bottom of the front page they have a link in small letters) for more details

Macworld 2008 starts tomo, exciting since they've already updated the Mac Pro, I'm hoping on new cinema displays, they aint gonna update the ipod like some are sayin, hopefully the powerbook and macbook will get a facebook, mac mini and apple tv with rentals (exclusive pixar movies before release maybe?)
I give up cant wait up till tomo :D

I wouldn't wait for the Macintels, but I heard there are some dual-dual-Powermacs around the corner - I'd wait two more weeks for them.

This is an Apple site, not a science site. There is a justification for having iPhone forums on an Apple site. There isn't a good justification for having a Science forum on an Apple site. At least, nobody's put forth a good one yet.

I believe I didn't make myself terribly clear. Not terribly interested in random discussions of science, or even the science behind Apple products. More...the use of Apple's in research. Their interests, especially in terms of performance, are vastly different even than other pro-users.
CalBoy's idea is also a good one - if there isn't enough volume for "Macs in Higher Ed", is there enough volume for "Macs in the Workplace?".

9 times out of 10 it's RAM that causes this. Take out your memory one stick at a time and see if you get the same panic. If the KP's stop then you will know the stick you have out of it is to blame.

as someone speculated in the uncovered drape thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=414004), could the whole "air" thing have something more directly related to the increasingly wrongly named iTunes and its function as a central hub for media, shopping and peripheral management? is this the year they finally rename it to something more appropriate? iHub? iAir? iSomethingLessLameThanThoseFirstTwo?

What you can do it enable breakpoints and when it crashes you can have a look in the debugger - it will tell you on what line the app crashed on.

If I lived in the UK I'd subscribe to GoMINI but it is soooo expensive to get over here! It works out to be about $10USD per issue. :eek:
I wish imported magazines whould cost only $10USD here. :o
Anyway, I don't subscribe to anything, but there's two comics I usually buy every month; Pondus and Nemi.
I used to buy a lot more magazines earlier, and had a subscription to the norwegian edition of PC World, plus there were other magazines I also bought very often, but after I got internet access I barely buy anything anymore.
Exception whould be if I'm some place without good internet access.. last time I was in a hospital I bought magazines for about 1000NOK (~157$USD) :eek:

I'd like to purchase a new fully decked out Mac Pro with the maximum 64GB of RAM, but I obviously don't want to have to pay Apple $3,550 for the extra RAM.
