It didn't do anything bad to my system, but the latest Free DV confirms that Avid are still the champions of crappy user interfaces. As if they needed to prove that!

I friend of mine just bought a 15 inch flatpanel with a cdr/rw-dvdr combo. I noticed the drive makes a lot of noise compared with my cdr/rw. We tried to burn a cd twice and 2 times an error. He has very cheap cd's and thursday I'll try it with a cdr of mine.
Do you guys (and girls) think he needs to go back to the dealer for the drive or is it common to make such noise? My last iMac had a dvdplayer and it was quit as well.
Thanx,
Gerror

Noticed this today, When playing with 1 of my 4 360 controllers I noticed that on two of them the bottom grey plastic bit is slightly darker but shiny and on the other two the grey bit was lighter but matte. Is this to do with the different models or what? Am I just seeing things?
You're not seeing things, the plastic on the initial models was different. It doesn't mean anything.

BTW, what do you have? What do you use? What's your workflow look like? Do you do any windows development?
Most of my work right now revolves around Windows development or Database development (which can be done in either platform, I usually just use Mac OS for that):
MBP: "Main" computer, mobile work machine, handles all my daily tasks including email, writing, etc.
MP: Number cruncher, when I'm at home I use this for Windows development (VMWare Fusion, Win7 64-bit, Office 2010). If I'm building a large project in Windows I'll boot natively using Bootcamp and let it crunch away for a few hours.
I also use my MP for my three hobbies: photography (a few terabytes of high-res photos), music (a few terabytes of samples/libraries), and gaming (WoW, Steam, SC2, or boot into Win7 for Call of Duty MW2).
I use Back-to-my-Mac using Clear 4G to get to my MP at home, and it'll even load a 150gb project file no problems (takes a few minutes to load, but it's workable).

I seem to be having a wireless problem.
I cannot connect wirelessly with this computer, Airport connects for a few seconds then I get the exclamation point saying there is no connection. I have run network diagnostics and restarted both the modem and the laptop many times and get nowhere. I do not feel it is a problem with the modem because my father's laptop connects fine. The only clue I have is the message stating that "Airport has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.172.132 and will not be able to connect to the internet." Any ideas?

It's "Glue". :)
Indeed it is, somewhat hastily applied with a packing glue gun. I reapplied it all later on when I revised some of the specs of the capacitors on the analog board. Since the factory manufacturing process involved applying some form of glue to the capacitors to secure them in place, I thought i'd follow the same route.
I only ever throw the 800k drive into the shots for the sake of somewhat completing the set, and I have yet to see a 400k drive going for a reasonable price on eBay AU. This machine accepts 800k disks anyway (being a 512Ke), so although it may look a little out of place, it works perfectly.

I have an iPad. I downloaded a software from Apple App Store, only to find that it was for iPhone with the small screen.
I completed a form on line and submitted to Apple App Store for a refund but only to be told to contact the software company. I emailed the software company, who told me to contact Apple App Store for the refund. Im getting the runaround.
Anyone else has experienced this kind of runaround? Any suggestion as to how I can get a refund either from Apple App Store or the software company?

TimeMachine is great, but I don't rely on it as my only backup either. I have one 1 TB drive partitioned into two partitions: one is slightly larger than my internal drive, and the other partition is the rest of the TB. I use CCC to clone my internal drive to the 1st partition nightly and TimeMachine backs up to the other partition. This way, if my internal HDD dies, I can boot right off the external and keep going. I use DropBox to back up all my super necessary files as well (I'm up to 5.8 GB without paying).
And, no, I don't consider my two partitions separate backups because they're on the same physical drive. But, still, it seems an effective solution to me. Even if a fire burns down my residence I still have all my important (small) files on DropBox.

I was having the same discussion on another forum as well and they all convinced me to stay away from RAID0 for this system, the files are too important to risk for a little speed boost.
The new direction I'm thinking is...
Disk 1: 128GB SSD: Boot Drive
Disk 2: 320GB Clone drive + Time Machine Backup for Disk 1
Disk 3: 2TB scratch/storage drive
Disk 4: 3TB Time Machine for Disk 3
Disk 5: 2TB clone of Disk 3. What do you think, needed?
Then, have an external drive to clone both Disk 1 and Disk 3 that will be off-site.
How does that sound?

I have an external HD and i want to plug it into the USB on the back of my router so I can access it anywhere, but I don't want the other people on my network to be able to access it. Some of the people on the network are windows computers and i want to know how to put a password on my HD so that Mac and Windows computers can't access it. Any idea on how to do this?

I bet they'll make a Nano Classic. Basically a Classic with flash memory.
Or maybe they'll make an original Nano, and the 6G Nano will be the Shuffle.

I'm a newbie to Mac OS unfortunately... I bought an airbook a few weeks ago - was great at first... it's now randomly freezing on me (and I mean frozen - no mouse movement / can't force quit) so i have to do a hard shut down... I think it started happening when I installed office 2011 and office communicator. I removed both and re-installed... still happening. Is there any logging I can do or logs i can check that would give me an indication of what is causing the problem?
thx

I found OReilly books the best. Oreilly has a nice pocket guide to css. That was all I needed to get me going and it was less than 10 bucks.

Simple. Use carbon copy cloned to mirror your Mac on the external drive. Then boot off the external on a friends Mac and sync your iOS devices with your data
