My early 2008 Macbook Pro just died after two and a half years. When I brought it into the Apple Store, they said my logic board had failed and wasn't my nVidia 8600GT. $1,100 to replace. I said no thanks.
I'll be needing a laptop this Sept for school and the new Macbook Pros look awesome. Is there anything about them I should be afraid of?? I don't want it to break down.
My original core duo macbook pro just died after 5+ years of daily use. The graphics card died (non-nvidia, so not covered). It would have been $900 or so to replace the logic board in the apple store, but they also have a flat rate repair that's $300 or so that will cover shipping to their repair facility in TX, and then cover labor and absolutely any parts that need replacing. I hadn't realized this was an option -- it's like paying $300 or so to have your laptop covered like it was under applecare again.
I love the 2011 mbp I'm typing on right now, and I'm sure you will love yours too, but if I could pay $300 and have a 2008 mbp working again? I'd do it. In the end I even paid the flat rate to have my original mbp repaired. For $300 I've definitely got uses for it, and it has sentimental value (I wrote my dissertation on it). I would presume that you could pay the $300 to have it fixed and then sell it for much more than that if you just wanted to help finance your new machine.
Potentially worth looking into. I'm surprised it's not more publicized as a service.

When you say "works fine when I set those rules manually in Firefox but not when I set them under network settings" do you mean Firefox ignores the settings in network settings? Does Safari correctly use the ones in Network Settings. If so I suspect the fault lies with Firefox and you have no alternative to use it's own settings. Such is life with not-quite fully Mac native applications.

Ok, so right now I have an iMac with a 320gb internal drive and a 1tb USB external that I use for both media storage and Time Machine. (it's in 2 partitions)
I just bought an 2x1tb RAID setup and I'm not really sure how I should set it up (0, 1, or individual discs).
Right now I'm kind of leaning towards keeping my 1tb usb external for Time Machine (in 1 1tb partition), and using the RAID external as a RAID 1 (mirroring) of the 2 1tb discs so I have live backups of all my media (ripped TV shows/movies, music, photos, etc) in case of any disc failure.
Any other suggestions?

I would look into utilizing the object tag rather than the embed tag.

Just curious what magazines everyone subscribes to, or steals from the dentist's office.
My dentist actually has a stack of TV Guides that are given to patients by the office manager as they leave. Let's see ... $695.00 for a crown, $500.00 for bleaching that produced so-so results and a $2.49 TV Guide in return. Talk about a drill job.

Great. But I care about 1 thing: fix the Spaces issues.
The Office applications (both 2004 and 2008) are the single WORST performing applications I have ever used on a Mac.
Seriously, for a company with the resources that Microsoft has, is it really too much to ask for spaces to work properly? Every other app works with spaces without a glitch, why doesn't office?
Switch to another application in spaces and go back to the previous office document: document moves to god knows which space. Same with the toolbox: have it open and who knows what might happen.
Will this ever get addressed?

Be specific about what you want to listen for.
There are much simpler ways of listening for some things than kqueues or select(). It's called launchd. You tell it what things to listen for: a change to a directory, a request to establish a socket, a certain time or day, etc. It then runs your program when that event occurs. Your program doesn't run at all unless and until the event occurs. And launchd is a boot process, so it's always running anyway, whether you're using its services or not.
You configure launchd through plists, so you may not even have to write any code. You might be able to use an existing tool, or a simple shell script, that's run when the event occurs.
Not every possible event or condition can be triggered through launchd, but for those that can, it's a huge savings of time and effort.
man launchd.plist

I Just downloaded the album. Most of the songs are in Hebrew (she's Israeli) and I don't speak the language aside from a few choice words that, if used, would ban me from MacRumors for eternity. Very melodic album nonetheless.

Truly wonderful pictures. The Nile one is awe-inspiring. Thanks to iBlue.
There seem to be slightly larger versions of some on the NASA site. I think this is an enhanced version of the Nile shot:

The angle has been changed but the cloud patterns seem the same.

Hmm, found the GIMP printer application, but it works only for USB printing.
What I need is something that will allow me to print to the printer plugged in to the AirPort if possible.

Lol. Yeah. Well the theme is made to be old skool.
And you were up in the club, dancing like your mom and your pops, word? :p
I'd like it a lot if it came in a mini version, FWIW...I feel like most FF themes have icons that are way too big, esp. on a 1024x768 laptop screen. They are more at home at 1280x1024 on my desktop.
But I do love the colors. Do yo' thang, boy! :)

Probably around the same time it ships, 2 weeks.
Seems like everything at the Keynote was "Available in just 2 weeks!"
takes time to roll everything out so they're not overloaded. or underprepared or overordered too many MBA.

I get to see what the PPC's are selling for in their raw form (public costs anyway ie. $146 US for a G4 500MHz in 44pcs lot [keeping in mind that is just the core before apple plays with it! no wonder apples cost more! Blame motorola]) and motorola is still charging to much for their processors. While Moto's processors may cost more than Intel's and AMD's (for good reason), I highly doubt that they are the sole contributors to Macs "higher" prices. Just look at the profit margin for Macs. They are much higher than any other computer manufacturer.
And the iBook costs a little more than a comparable P3 laptop. There's an IBM chip in there, not MOT.
Blaming Motorola for Apple's high prices is like blaming Nakamichi for the high price of Lexus'. NOTE - this was the only analogy I could think of at 7:30 am... sorry.

wondered whether Starbucks being from Seattle was the choice there. Yet another Californian dig at Washington state
Probably some connection to the Rumor that Starbucks wants to put iTunes downloads in its stores.

I appreciate the feedback guys. As i said before, I just heard it as a rumor. Don't know if the person really actually KNEW much about the details of what they had possibly heard from someone else. To be honest, i just hated the idea of spending 2k on a dope piece of gear and then in 4 months, something better comes out....that would have urked my nerves.
