I can't figure out how to place a song in the category of "simply like" and not recommended.

I've been very pleased with my 15" powerbook... I've had it for 6 months now- and it's been flawless. So much so- that I've convinced 4 of my friends to get Macs :) Unfortunately one of my friends who got an iBook on my suggestion is having big problems all of a sudden. As far as I can tell.. his issues started about the time of the 10.3.8 update.. but I'm not completely sure.
His computer boots up fine, and seems to run fine for a while... but then gets boged down and programs crash left and right... Word crashes... iTunes... Mail...Firefox...etc.. the computer has "rebooted" on it's own several times. Generally not healthy.
I've run the cron jobs... repaired disk permissions... and--cleared the cache with ONYX. I also reran the 10.3.8 upgrade using the 100MB combo download. none of which helped.
I've also tried updating the prebinding in ONYX... but it fails- and gives me this:

I'm the resident computer guy 'round here, but have never had to deal with OSX problems! What else can I do to repair this thing? I'd love to be able to fix this computer problems without a reinstall... that's what I have to do with all the XP machines I work on .. not with OSX! Right? If I boot from the OSX CD can I "repair" the OS instalation? Someone please restore my faith in this wonderful OS!
Thanks-

Ok, this is going to sound really silly... but I was just reading about all the people in the iPad forum complaining about their pages in safari reloading. Of course this is due the 512mb of RAM and the way the OS is designed to free up any older space whenever it needs more space.
That got me thinking... I know that Lion is being designed to run more iOS-like, where the OS is in charge of handling RAM. Does this mean that with Lion is there the potential to have the same situation? Obviously Macs have more RAM so the chance of it happening is reduced.
Or along those lines, say I have itunes (or any app) open and "running". If I run enough RAM intensive apps over the next few days without again using iTunes, would Lion ever get to the point where the window would actually close and shut down the app? I know that if you don't have any windows open the app could shut down, but what about if you leave the window open?

BOINC doesn't support OpenCL or CUDA beyond being a 'gateway' for the apps that use BOINC to enable it. The apps themselves that run in BOINC are the ones that must do the legwork of incorporating OpenCL or CUDA support into the programs. CUDA support on the mac is very limited compared to windows, so you don't see any MacCUDA clients. OpenCL is very promising, but it's still a pretty new technology so I don't expect programmers to really use it much for the time being, but as time goes on that will improve. Also with CUDA much farther along on Windows, which in turn is a majority of BOINC users, there isn't much incentive to use OpenCL yet. OpenCL is 10.6, and 10.6 is a small percentage of Mac, which in turn are a small percentage of BOINC users.
See the problem? Again this will change over time, but for the moment don't expect much GPGPU support in BOINC for macs.
Let's hope this changes!

I hate when people ask this question.. you will always be asking wether you should get the new model or wait out for the next one. Just get it now, sell it when the 3 comes out and move on... otherwise you will be here every year asking the same question while the rest of us will be enjoying the latest piece of technology Apple delivers.

Not that I REALLY care (okay I do, otherwise I wouldn't say anything)... but 3 people made comments to me today regarding my wimpy, slightly less impressive name tag. As the educator, I gotta ask, "Couldn't they just give me the regular tag with a different color on the bottom?"
Jeeze... it's borderline discrimination. I had been dreaming about going to this thing for about 6 years. I register online, take off two days of work, fly out to San Francisco, wait in line to get my tag (which took forever because they couldn't move the line fast enough - causing me to miss the only clinic I was able to go to (according to the guy at the door), they don't give me a bag.
It has been very sad and disappointing today. I pray Tuesday is better.

Note to self: Do not sign up for the educator thing ever again - weak!

Anyone going? I happen to be on a work assignment across the street from the mall, so I'm thinking about camping out. I was thinking 1 p.m., but now I'm thinking 12 p.m. might be a little safer? I'm looking to grab at 32 GB white WIFI.

Quick Look is only for taking a "quick look" at a file ;) It can't be used for editing, etc. Just continue using the existing Quick Look triggers (spacebar, or selecting from the right-click contextual menu).
If you want to change which application opens a file (ie Numbers, MS Excel, etc.), right-click the file in Finder and select "Get Info". From the info window, go to the "Open With" header and change as desired.
