Normally if you want to know if something has happened, your c program has to ask, usually in a loop. Can I do this the other way? If, for example a file appears or a usb port is used, can the c program be told without asking. I'm trying to limit use of the computers resources.

I'm of two minds, which I don't think are really all that incompatible.
The cynical pragmatist side says, "hope in one hand and crap in the other, and see which piles up first." Hoping things work out is no substitute for doing something, anything, to make them work out. I grew up around people who took "hope" to suggest they should just let everything go and trust "God" to make their lives work out as "He" sees fit, and that passive attitude disgusts me.
On the other hand, hope is the counterpoint to despair and resignation that the worst will happen despite what we do. Hope can encourage us to take positive action when we would otherwise be discouraged into complacency by the perceived likelihood of failure. I have seen too many people with negative attitudes who have an almost uncanny tendency to get exactly what they expect out of life. Depressive fatalism likewise disgusts me.
The common thread, of course, is that hope is valuable to exactly the extent it gets you off your ass and into the game. Whatever encourages that is a virtue; whatever discourages it a vice.
As for my own sources and objects of hope, that's a bit too personal for PRSI.
Fantastic post... one of MANY! Though it's a terribly embarrassing cop-out, I really couldn't put it any better so I don't dare try, it's hopeless. :p

I have the latest Boinc Client running and in the messaging center it says no useable gpus found?
So CUDA still isn't supported on the Macbooks Nvidia 9400m?
It's supported. You have to install the CUDA drivers though. It's available on the nVidia website.

This is strictly amateur analysis but what seems particularly not great about this is that AAPL from basically the beginning of the year had been on a protracted slide down until that last quarterly report came out and beat expectations. Then things turned north. So go back and revise/remove that report... and what happens?
Having said that, if we see the magic phone or next generation iPod in the next month or so, I think people will want in.

you're not being clear at all.
what are you trying to do exactly? take possession of the white iPhone so your wife can have the black one? but you're trying to keep all your messages and stuff right?
What I am trying to do is replace my wife's black iPhone4 with a new white one. She would like to be able to keep her text message threads that reside on the black phone.

I must agree with every one else. the X800XT is the way to go.
However, if you want to wait a little while longer ATI will be releasing their next core soon.
The next core (R520) will be amazing with core graphics! It can even help decode H.264 video. It will be a very nice step up from the current R420 core.

Ok.. Tell me why you think AV is the way to go...??
I'm not saying AV is the best solution, it's got it's flaws, but a vote against AV is a vote to say you are happy with the current first past the post system.
When i vote I want the party i vote for in power... The majority vote is the fairest vote.
First past the post is the same system that let George W Bush into power with less votes than Al Gore (source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_presidential_election,_2000)). That's the system that a political party can get 20% of the overall vote but no seats. First past the post is only good for 2 horse races, we are now in the reality of 3 party politics.
First past the post means your vote only really matters if you happen to live in a couple of key marginal seats. AV means there are no safe seats and your MP has to work for you.
AV only dilutes the government even further than it already is?
Governments being formed by receiving just 40% of the votes is not a majority. Governments being 'diluted' by AV is only reflecting the reality of the vote.

Hello,
new to motion, but noticed how much RAM it hogged, gobbled up all 8 gigs avail.
i have dimms 3,4,7 and 8 open with the rest of the slots filled with 2GB.
How much should I shoot for and whats the smart way to fill slots?
Thanks!
Wow...really depends on what you're doing in Motion (i.e. HD video with multiple layers). But I've done Motion with 4GBs of RAM and didn't notice much of a slow down.
Of course, adding RAM won't hurt - just remember to install RAM evenly (ie. all the sticks be the same amount).

Applecare really comes in handy if you have problems. I had an early '08 macbook pro with the faulty nvidia card. The entire thing must have been replaced before I sold it: two bad screens, multiple fans replaced, logic board replaced, hard drive replaced, and probably more, I'm just forgetting.
Yeah, I was amazed at how caring the Apple Support rep seemed. He actually seemed like he wanted to help me get my problem fixed. In my experiences with Dell and HP, that has never happened. They have never really cared. Their reps seemed tired, bored, and unwilling to even address my problem a couple of times.
You can run a great company that makes great products, but in my opinion if your support sucks, it's not worth buying your products and I have learned this from experience after dealing with Dell and HP. This is especially true when it comes to laptop/desktop companies since people already spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on laptops/desktops themselves, in addition to buying accessories for them, warranties, and computer parts.
So, in my opinion it all comes down to how helpful a companies Support team is.

I was wondering if anyone else is having problems with software update tonight. It's not working for me. :(
It tried to check for updates and then times out.
I think your observation of a reboot fixing this was just coincidence. Software update seemed to be problematic earlier this evening, but is now operating normally.

The Daily Mail is a supermarket tabloid, yes.
WOW  I hadn't realised it had done so well in improving its social station whilst I have been away living in Asia. :D Upgraded to *supermarket* status. And that, all the way from the gutter!:D:apple:
