I have a homebuilt desktop (core components were upgraded 14 months ago on a <$800 budget) and a 2011 13" MBP. In addition to gaming, my uses include programming/software development and image manipulation (Photoshop), and I'm very satisfied with this combination.
My brother has a top of the line 2011 15" MBP. While it can run most newer games, it's still significantly slower than my desktop where gaming is concerned, despite the fact that said desktop is now over a year old and has a mid-range GPU (Radeon 5770). Towards the end of this year I will likely replace the 5770 with a next generation high end card (for all of ~$250 at that), and the aforementioned comparison will then border on absurdity. Because powerful GPUs will eat up a lot of wattage in short order and put out a lot of heat to match, they don't pair well with mobile platforms and thus there's really no alternative to a proper desktop if you have any serious interest in gaming.
Besides, it's nice to have some level of redundancy in a worst case scenario. Laptops are relatively prone to theft and hardware failure (though you can certainly mitigate the risk of the former to a very low level). Oh, and definitely build the desktop yourself. It's really pretty easy these days (what with the vendors themselves matching parts for you, and every major hardware site out there offering build guides) and you'll get better parts for the money. Putting it together can be fun in its own right, if you enjoy tinkering.

I got one more idea for the site arn (if you still read this thread) how about a listing of sites you get the rumors from, or people, who give a lot of rumors, and keep track. for instance "Apple Turns (3/4) stated we should..." or any site who gives the rumor, the (3/4) being the stats, like they've been correct on 3/4 of their rumors that you've had on the page or something, so if we see 14 rumors that never happened from somerumorsite.com, we know not to believe them as much when they're saying g8 powerbooks coming out next week.

This is just a headsup and wake-up call to the rumor mongers. I think people don't understand the difference between "rumors" and "reality".
"Rumors" are reports/stories/sources that indicate possibilities in the future. Some may come true, some may not.
"Reality" involves things that are publically released by the companies we are discussing.
Just keep this in mind... and it's something I've seen people in other forums and sites talk about.... they talk as if the 7470 chip actually exists and Apple just isn't using them.
The 7470 chip is what we call a "rumor". This chip does not officially exist. To use it to complain about "Why doesn't Apple use the damn 7470 in the PowerMacs!" is the same as complaining about why "Apple doesn't use Santa Claus to build Power Macs" or "Why doesn't Apple use the damn Easter Bunny to build PowerMacs"
Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the 7470 are all equally as "real"

Look into the Cylinder of Destiny/Golden Triangle.
In this scenario you use AD for authentication and OD for computer/user management. This would be the best way to do what you are trying to do.
Alternatively, use AD alone and use something like Casper from JAMF or Absolute Manage.

With an old G3 there should be plenty of literature. I'd be looking on the manufacturers' sites to see whether they support the OS you're running.
Also, the ebay ad says it has a PS/2 port, I think this is more likely an ADB port - I don't think any Mac has ever shipped with a PS/2 port.
I figured the PS\2 post was a typo. I always thought that older macs used different keyboard plugs.

Good price.. except it seems Superbiiz only provides a 30-day repair/replacement warranty. After which, it's up to the manufacturer if they'll repair/replace the item. In this case, Hynix... who apparently don't talk to consumers about RMA - they only talk to the sellers. So.. uh.. well, they may or may not replace it.
Buying from OWC/Transintl provide a lifetime warranty.
So.. risk versus less risk... or cheaper vs expensive.
you can then buy a square trade warranty for 3 years

False. Tell that to the reduced framerates and skipping animation.
Any proofs, or we'll stop on "just sayin'"? ;) Maybe something wrong with your setup?

Holy Crap! I can't believe someone would pay $2858.91 to be drug across the country by that crazy guy! Looks like they have hollywood types looking into filming this. I wonder if it's one of them bidding on it.

There wont be any iPad's by that time. We'll simply have iPhone's that unfold into a 10 inch screen if you need a larger screen surface for what you're doing. :D
The iphone 20 stretches to any size you need.
Hopefully I can keep my current iphone unlimited data plan that I have been grandfathered into. :)

The App Store is still giving me the "All Apps are up to date" message.
What's up with that...?
Do you have the 4.3GB XCodeInstaller.app in your /Applications directory? If not, try putting it there. If you've deleted it - try (re)moving your /developers directory.

I used Disk Utility to erase all data on the drive and re-format. That took care of the problem. Thanks for your assistance.

Uh, I think you misinterpreted what that App does.
It doesn't let you use 3G service on your iPod. It lets iPhone users (iPad too I think) use 3G for things that Apple usually restricts to WiFi like Facetime and large App Store downloads. I think you wasted that $4. :(

Beep codes in Windows are dependent upon the exact hardware used. Based on what you posted, it sounds to me like a power management issue. Fortunately, it also appears that no harm has occurred.

Probably it's better to delete a plist than trying to alter it. As you were told, after deleting the file, a new one is generated by the application when it next opens.
If you are concerned about initially deleting the file, you can always move it onto the desktop and then delete it after everything is running ok. In the unlikely event of something untoward, you can always move the original file back to its original position.

I know those gestures, I have them enabled in my non-jailbroken iPad 2 on 4.3 GM. You enable them with Xcode, just as you did with the beta.
You're kidding! LOL [bangs head on desk] Why did I not think of that? So you should be able to enable them in Xcode on my jail broken 4.3 iPad.
Thanks mate, you're the best!

they may be a bit dated now, but they're still right. no matter how much you may dislike it, the majority of visitors to a website will be from IE, and it's completely pointless to not code for IE as you delete nearly 80% of your audience. that's all well and good if you're just coding for yourself and want a rebellious "mac only" site, but if you're coding a commercial site, you need to make it work across the board. it's just pretty annoying that there isn't anything for mac that truly represents the IE6 platform to make this possible.
it's swings and roundabouts really...
I don't think anyone is arguing against the fact that IE is the dominant browser on the net and it's important to test for it. The bottom line is IE should not be your primary testing browser. You should always test in the most compliant browsers and work your way down. I'm betting that book fails to mention the fact that IE has quite a few problems rendering CSS correctly.

Hey guys,
Hope everyone is doing good, I would like to ask if anyone is experiencing a delay from Apple and retail stores regarding the white 32GB iPhone 4. I can't seem to find any in stock at any retailer :(.
I ordered mine via apple online UK but still waiting for them to change the status to preparing for shipment.
Talk about demand for the 32GB version, the 16GB is available everywhere near me.
Hmmm....I'm not sure. I guess some ppl were waiting for the white iPhone 4 in 32gb.
