im in the process of making my avatar into an ipod ad, but im having trouble with the color. this is what keeps on happening whenever i preview it in any browser or export it. it shows up fine in imageready, but outside of it, there are dots, and the color is darker. i still haven't gotten to blacking out the baby yet or adding the ipod, so bear with me.
thanks for any help :)
edit-file's too big, im gonna shrink it, then post it.

I installed Folding@home on my mac mini (g4 version). However I'm not sure if it's working or not. The progress bar is at zero percent for a long time. How long does it usually take to complete one of these jobs?
On my Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz its taking about 2 hours per 1%

Does anyone happen to know the name of a commonly used program that allows you to change the desktop theme in OS 9? Thanks! (It's driving me nuts...)

#!/bin/bash
sh ~/Desktop/install.sh
exit 1
save it was whatever.command, and make that file executable. Should work I believe...
No idea what you're after with putting the install script "inside the package"

I haven't found anything I couldn't do in Lion, that I could in 10.6..
I like Lion on the whole too, but to say that there's nothing in 10.6 that you can't do in Lion is patently untrue. Just look at Spaces. In 10.6, you could move between spaces in a grid quickly and easily. In Lion, you can't do that and you can't change it back.
The fact is, there are some features that they did just remove. Most of which were done for the sake of making things "simpler" for new users, which is where I think a lot of people get the term "dumbing down".

I have an original Macintosh that I pulled from my parents garage and I was able to insert one disk successfully, which would not then I eject, so I took a paperclip and manually ejected it. Since then, the machine will not accept any disks, they go in most of the way, but the computer does not "click" and accept the disk. Any ideas? Thanks

Nothing, you can't do anything about it, so why bother?
You could stop buying Apple products if you feel so strongly about it, but I don't see that happening.

From Apple's new site:
"Source code for the kernel of Mac OS X 10.4.7 for Intel are now available. Several changes were made in order to publish the kernel (xnu) sources. As a result, the kernel built from these sources differs from the one found in the 10.4.7 software update. In order to accommodate these changes, several kernel extensions were also modified and must be downloaded and installed in order to run a kernel built from these sources on Mac OS X 10.4.7 for Intel."
So they haven't released the version of the kernel that is 10.4.7 as open source, they've just released something very closely resembling it, with no public comment about what's different, near as I can tell so far.

Yes. A switch or router, e.g. from Netgear, LinkSys, would work. If you're downloading large files using the two computers simultaneously, they'd share the bandwidth and slow each other's downloads, but with normal use (browsing, email) you wouldn't notice any difference with having both connected simultaneously. I have four computers often connected simultaneously.
If you're likely to be transferring large amounts of data between the two Macs, get a gigabit switch, which is 10x faster but costs maybe $10 more than a 100Mbit/s switch or router.
In fact, you may not want wireless now, but may in the future, so getting a wireless router like blevins suggested means you could connect e.g. an iPad, or let a friend or family member connect when visiting. You can turn off the wireless when not in use.

Thanks for the tips so far. After reading that the Performa 6290cd was one of the worst Macs ever made, I immediately bought one !! Not here yet, but if operational, I'll use it to test the software. If successful, I'll know that powerpc models aren't out of the question and maybe grab a few old, inexpensive Macs to toy with this project.
Other than a couple of Minis I have around here from the past couple of years, this is also gonna be good for filling in my knowledge of Macs from the mid years.
Being mostly from the Windows world, tearing this thing apart will be fun.
I found a guy selling internal scsi burners for Macs. From Apple docs, it appears I can lift the case and replace the internal cd-rom drive with one of these burners. Any tips on those- brands etc that may work with the old Macs?
Also, am I right that I should be looking for Toast 4 to possibly burn backups to cd if the burner works ? Old versions of Toast seem very hard to find.
This 6290cd is loaded with about every card option Apple had at the time and I know this thing was aimed at the Sears crowd etc. This one even appears to have the dedicated vga option as well as the standard Apple display type connector. Owner says os 9 is on it but the restore cd will be 7.6 or 7.5. Think I'll start with an immediate restore to that. Any opinions on how this model handles os 8? By the way, it has a gigantic 48mb of ram (ha ha)
Will also explore networking once I add an ethernet card to the comm or ld port, but those projects are for another time.
This is a cool place !

I know I can set the whole of my system audio output to Soundflower, but I require the ability to output sound just from a given application through SF.
Apps like GarageBand can do it normally because they have built-in options to do so, but of course that isn't always the case for every app.
I was thinking something like this:
http://tg.tmiz.net/softwares/clwea/
...except instead of Chrome, I'd rather use Safari or Firefox. Should I ask the developer to make another version where I can select a different application, or is there another way to do what I want?
Parallels can accomplish what I need, but it's a pain to start it up and have it consume so much RAM for a simple task.

Hey all. I can't believe what just happened over my Thanksgiving break! My employer offered me an upper level marketing position for the marketing company I worked for as an intern for years. :) What does this have to do with a feeler thread you ask haha. Plain and simple, the company is giving me a nice Dell Latitude loaded with Adobe Creative Suite CS2 and QuarkXPress 6.1! Yeah, its windows I know, but its worth it for a free computer with all that software. I really should sell my PowerMac that I just got not more than a few weeks ago (used) since it really won't be used much at this point. I was thinking it would be worth somewhere in the $1,600 range plus shipping (with the upgraded graphics and remaining Applecare). I have had some really lowball offers but I know how much this system is worth the that price is pretty solid. PM me with any offers. It has the following specs
PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8 (900MHz FSB)
768MB DDR RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB Graphics Card
8x Superdrive
80GB Serial ATA Internal HD
120GB External Segate 7,200RPM HD
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Panther (Tiger makes it chirp in WoW)
Applecare till June 2007
Office 2004 ONLY if you are a current student
Apple Pro White Keyboard (keyboard is only a few weeks old)
Apple Pro White Mouse (came with computer but hardly used)
NOW ON EBAY - Click here and bid (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5837350366&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1) :) Auction ends December 8th so bid now! :)
It will include the original box, ALL paperwork for applecare, and all software discs. If you are interested make me an offer. No trades please. I can now finally accept paypal as well to speed up the purchase process for anyone interested. Thanks all!
Oh and the mac is in MINT condition and runs just great. I can post pics when I get home.

I would like to format my ipod to fat 32 for cross platform compatibility, & read that disk utility can destroy some of the ipod settings, & that doing it through parallels & a virtual machine does not work well either, so that leaves using a PC with itunes on it.
I have access to a pc in my home, but it has windows xp service pack 2 on it, & the ipod 7th gen requires service pack 3, would I be able to hook it up to the pc to format it? or would it not be able to read it?
