Guys, got a question. My main hobby is shooting fireworks, and I belong to a number of websites where all my "pyro friends" post videos of their various shoots. Ever since I have switched to a Macbook Pro, I always get "requires a plug in" on a couple of the sites, and I can't view the videos.

I get that message on both Firefox and Safari.

What do I need to install on my macbook Pro to be able to watch those videos seamlessly? I don't want to have to convert them...I just want to be able to click play, and they play.

    Can anyone help.

    Dan

I have bought it and am impressed so far!

Web version is fine for the odd use, but I expect to use it a lot, and access via a dedicated app is far nicer than through a web browser. In particular I like the extended keyboard, which means I don't have to keep moving screens to type in a mix of symbols, numbers and text.

Tap and hold on the question mark you want to see. A dialog should pop up for 'open in' then choose photos if it is a picture, if it is a different type of file such as a PDF either iBooks or another app that you use for those.

Yeah, Pixar pretty much wins every year except for Cars and Monsters Inc. There was not a category for animated film when Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were released.

This year Toy Story 3 was nominated for Best Picture also, which is a big deal since that's only happened three times for an animated film (Beauty and the Beast, UP and Toy Story 3).

Jobs actually went to the Oscars last year for UP.

    Hello,

new to motion, but noticed how much RAM it hogged, gobbled up all 8 gigs avail.

i have dimms 3,4,7 and 8 open with the rest of the slots filled with 2GB.

How much should I shoot for and whats the smart way to fill slots?

    Thanks!

Wow...really depends on what you're doing in Motion (i.e. HD video with multiple layers). But I've done Motion with 4GBs of RAM and didn't notice much of a slow down.

Of course, adding RAM won't hurt - just remember to install RAM evenly (ie. all the sticks be the same amount).

You can restore your iTunes Library file from just before the deletion, via Time Machine. You'll have to do this while iTunes is NOT running, though. By default, the file is here: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library

Thanks for the reply, but as i stated, my last TM backup was from a month ago. Are you suggesting that there would be a more recent copy anyway?

I am in line now, I don't know how many people are in front of me. It's back past Sharper Image now. The doors just opened so we're slowly creeping forward. Maybe there will still be t-shirts left by the time I get up there!

Fairfax here, Fair Oaks mall, about 100 people as of 1:45. Fair Lakes is where I will try, Best Buy/Target/Wal-Mart no lines, but not sure how "limited" their stocks are.

    Any updates re:

Clarendon, Tysons, Fair Oaks lines ??

Would love to hear. Going to pick up my wife from work and drive to one of those stores...

Okay, now this was the closest category I could find for this topic, but what I have to say must be said. My brother downloaded Kazza on my Dell Opitplex GX150 with Windows XP 256mb/20gig, the computer ran great until he did this. Now, I get major spyware, popups, spam, and a whole list of stuff, I can't even use it anymore it is slower then an LC III (really!), WTF are people downloading it for, you agree to have pop up's even when your computer is not on the internet and your browsers is quit, it seems like every 5 min large amounts of pop up's happen, and you can not use Kazza (A P2P network) with out allow it to happen, how do I get rid of all of that Kazza and junk it comes with?? I need help!

The M0116 should have the same tactile feedback as the original Apple Extended Keyboard (released in '87 with the SE and II), although be careful here, as the Extended Keyboard II was released in 1990, and those keys are a little softer (and quieter).

And I'm with you - I consider the late 80s Apple keyboards to have the best feel, although they are a little loud by today's standards.

Ah. Thanks for the explanation. I was trying to figure out why they would be doing this from the individual back to the servers.

I can see why this is such a screwy process. I guess I always thought (assumed) they were threading it but now that you mentioned it I see exactly what you mean.

One thing that doesn't quite make since to me though is why does it rely on networking if it's all local? I know this part must be true because I find that folding frequently crashes and/or becomes corrupted when I change networks.

It seems like this should also make it friendlier to other tasks being run on the system since it will be one multithreaded task possibly making it more flexible. I know right now I frequently have to pause folding or re-nice it if I plan on running any large streaming clients like Netflix.

This is all speculation, as I don't even run the program, but here goes: The only reason I can imagine they would use MPI at the client side as opposed to threading it is that they are already using MPI to communicate back with the main servers. If this is the case, it would be relatively easy (from a learning-curve point of view) to continue on toward using this to communicate at the client side. If you're a grad student who's never written anything multithreaded, it's easier to stick with what you know than to experiment with something new. Likewise, going the multiprocess w/MPI route, you don't have to worry about shared memory or mutexes, so it's easier for the noob programmer to implement. Otherwise, I see no tangible benefit for using MPI like this.

I wrote cluster software with lammpi before I ever began writing multithreaded apps. I can attest that the MPI route takes less brain power. The multithreading route may be simpler to code, but there's a lot more to think about. Even in the professional field, I was the only person at my previous company who was not afraid of multithreading.

I've never heard of them before, but these 'Steelseries Siberia' cans look like an interesting design.

Over ear, neck-band, extendable microphone, remote control.

hmm looks ok. They have been out for a while just looking at the video search history. I don't know if I would use it out and about.

    Hey guys

    Heres a piccy: http://img445.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc000233xx.jpg

I was given this motherboard and told its a Gigabit ethernet one. Though it looks exactly like my Digital Audio's motherboard. There is a number on it which says 820-1153-A. Probably means something?

    Thanks

    Will
Google it. Comes up as a "Gigabit ethernet" board.

Ahh bus-powered is the term I was looking for. Thank you for all the informative replies, much appreciated.

Just some final questions.. is there any advantage to using a outlet-powered HD over a portable bus-powered HD? And how much difference will I notice between a 5400RPM and a 7200RPM drive? The difference in size would be 250GB, since OWC only sells up to 750GB at 7200RPM, is it really worth the speed?

Heck, is there a reason to use a portable? Now that I'm thinking about it, it's convenient, but maybe unnecessary. What are you guys using? Bus-powered or outlet?

I don't know technically if there is an advantage of powered HDD's over bus powered HDD's, but I feel better with a powered drive knowing that I am not over-taxing my USB ports with added load.

You will notice a measurable but not extravagant difference in performance in a 7200RPM HDD over the 5400RPM HDD.

Only you can decide if the trade off in speed over capacity is worth it.

I have a few powered HDD's that I use for Time Machine backups, and I do not carry them around. They stay in one place 99% of the time. Therefore I have no need for a more portable storage device other than my laptop itself. Again, this is a decision only you can make because it comes down to personal preference. There are many options available to you no matter which way you decide.

I installed trim enabler earlier today. My question is how can you tell if it's working? Is there anything more I need to do? When I checked the drive it said Yes it supported trim and it looks like it's enabled but I just want to make sure there is not something more I need to do. Thanks

The only things I ever do that use Silverlight are Netflix on my computer, and Bungie's website and their Halo stats, game, and film clip viewer. But, I can already do both of those things on the 360, so I can't say that I'm really in dire need of Silverlight.
